Objective: This study aimed to identify factors that affect the frequency of secondhand smoke exposure for adolescents in different places.
Methods: Based on the 15th(2019) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, this study clarified the general characteristics of non-smoking adolescents according to the frequency of secondhand smoke exposure and conducted a polynomial logistic regression analysis to recognize risk factors by location.
Results: The possibility of experiencing secondhand smoke more than three times a week was commonly associated with sex, drinking experience in all three places. The high probability of experiencing exposure to secondhand smoke more than three times a week at home was associated with low perceived household economic condition, living with a guardian (OR=3.60), and having a father(OR=1.60) and a mother(OR=1.85) with low educational level.
The elevated chance of experiencing three or more secondhand smoke exposures at school was associated with increasing age (OR=1.12), coeducational schools (OR=1.99), and boys' schools (OR=2.06) compared to girls' schools. It also related to specialized vocational high schools (OR=3.15), general high schools (OR=1.31) compared to middle schools. In public places, the high risk of reporting secondhand smoke exposure more than three times a week was associated with living with the guardian (OR=2.82), low perceived household economic condition, and living in the metropolitan (OR=1.42) and the mid-sized cities (OR=1.34) compared to the rural area.
Conclusion: Factors affecting the frequency of exposure to secondhand smoke varied by location in this study. It suggests that differentiated actions, policies, and campaigns are needed for each spot to prevent secondhand smoke exposure in adolescents.
